Using innovative technologies to
treat stormwater runoff
Proctor's new city hall and community center, located near the
banks of Kingsbury Creek, incorporated an innovative design
to deal with stormwater runoff from the parking lot and rooftop.
The parking lot drains into two vegetated swales with rocky
bottoms. Some of this water can then naturally infiltrate into
the ground. What's left, along with the water from the building
rooftops, flows through a peat filter, which pulls out sediment
and other pollutants and gives the water a chance to cool before
it enters the stream.
This design cools the water and reduces the amount of runoff
and some of the pollutants that would otherwise enter Kingsbury
Creek, if the parking lot was designed with curb and gutters
and a direct storm sewer connection to the creek. |
